As one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK, we employ more than 22,000 people across the region. Like any complex organisation, our jobs in Leeds cover all aspects of ensuring the day-to-day delivery of our services to over 1.5 million patients every year across our seven hospital sites.

The Leeds Way values

Hospitals in Leeds 

St James's University Hospital

Based in the Burmantofts area of Leeds, the first site opened in 1874 as the Poor Law Infirmary and was renamed in 1925 as St James’s Hospital. In the early 1970’s the hospital became a University Hospital and in the same decade the site expanded to include three new wings.

The most recent addition to the St James’s site is the hospitals Bexley Wing which is a state of the art cancer centre which was first opened in 2008.

Leeds General Infirmary – LGI

Based in the heart of Leeds City Centre, the LGI has been treating patients in Leeds for over 250 years. The current LGI site had been on Great George Street since 1869 and since then has had expansions and new wings added to the site to make it the hospital it is today.

Today the LGI is a designated Level 1 Major Trauma Centre within West Yorkshire and has Helipad based on the top of the Jubilee Wing to receive the most critically ill patients.

Leeds Children’s Hospital

Leeds Children’s Hospital is also based within the LGI and is one of the UK’s largest specialist children’s hospitals.

A dedicated Children’s A&E is also based with in the LGI for all under 16’s who require emergency treatment.

Leeds Dental Institute

The Leeds Dental Institute is based within the Worsley Building which is close to the Leeds General Infirmary hospital site.

The first iteration of today’s Dental Institute opened in 1928 and in 1948 following the passing of the NHS Act the institute became a part of the United Leeds Hospitals.

Due to growing patient needs in the 1970’s a new dental school and hospital were planned for the site and The Worsley Building which is still the home of Leeds Dental Institute was opened in 1979.

Chapel Allerton Hospital

Chapel Allerton Hospital can be found in the Chapel Allerton area of Leeds. The site was first opened in 1927 to care for wounded soldiers from the First World War. The site was opened as a replacement to a military hospital in another area of Leeds.

In 1953, the site became a general hospital, and a new wing was added in 1975 with further additions being added to the site in the 1990’s.

Today the hospital hosts the Complex Rehabilitation unit where patients with a range of conditions are supported by specialist therapy teams.

Seacroft Hospital

Seacroft Hospital is based on York Road in the Seacroft area of Leeds, and the current site was first opened in 1904 and became an NHS hospital in 1948.

In 2002 the RADU (Receipt and Distribution Unit) opened on the site as a catering unit which provides patient meals to all main hospital sites in Leeds 365 days a year.

In 2024 construction started on the site for the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease and the centre was officially opened on 3rd November 2025.

Wharfedale Hospital

Wharfedale Hospital is based in the Otley area of Leeds. The first hospital on the site opened in 1873 as part of the Wharfedale Union Workhouse and was expanded in 1907.

In 1948 the hospital joined NHS as the Otley County Hospital and was later renamed as Wharfedale General Hospital. In 2005 a new hospital was developed and opened on the site to modernise the facilities.
